Adjective - Comparative Degree




RULES   FOR   COMPARATIVE   DEGREE :---
  
1. Most  Adjectives of one syllable or two syllables, form the Comparative by adding '-er' to the Positive . 
POSITIVE  COMPARATIVE
Tall    Taller 
Young  Younger 
Kind  Kinder

2. When the Positive ends in 'e', only '-r' is added to the Positive.

 

POSITIVE         COMPARATIVE
Fine                          Finer
Noble  Nobler
Able                         Abler

  3. When the Positive ends in 'y', which is preceded by a consonant. then 'y' is changed into 'i' before adding '-er'.

POSITIVE           COMPARATIVE
Happy  Happier
Easy   Easier
Wealthy  Wealthier

  4. When the Positive is a word of one syllable and ends in a single consonant, preceded by a short vowel, this consonent is doubled before adding '-er'.
      
POSITIVE  COMPARATIVE
Red Redder
Sad Sadder
Hot  Hotter

  5. When the Positive is a word of more than two syllables,'more' is used before the Positive.

POSITIVE  COMPARATIVE
