Pronoun



    PRONOUN :--
 
   Definition:-- A pronoun is a word which is used in place of a noun.
   e.g.:--
     
      I, he, she, it, his, which, you, they, them etc.

  Note:--

 
    * Pronoun means for-a-noun.
    * It is used to avoid unneccesary repitition of a noun.
    * It always refers to a noun that precedes it.
    * The number,gender and person of the pronoun is the same as those of the noun it replaces.
   e.g.:--
 
   We may say ---

    * Ram is absent, because Ram is ill.
   But it is better to avoid the repitition of the noun ‘Ram’, and say---
    * Ram is absent,because he is ill.

Parts of Speech



PARTS OF SPEECH

  Words are divided into different kinds according to their use; i.e .according to the work they do in a sentence.

 The parts of speech are eight in number :--

 1. Noun - - - - - - - - Naming   Words
 2. Pronoun - - - - - For a Noun Words
 3. Adjective- - - - - Describing Words
 4. Verb - - - - - - - --- Action Words
 5. Adverb - - - - - -  Describing (verb) Words
 6. Preposition- - -Relation Words
 7. Conjunction- - Joining Words
 8. Interjection - - -Exclamatory Words

Phrase and Clause



 THE PHRASE:
   Definition :--
 
* A group of words which makes sense but 'not complete' sense is called a Phrase.

  In the following sentences,the groups of words in colour are Phrases:-

  (a) The sun rises in the east.
                            
  (b) It was a sunset of great beauty.
                              
  (c) The tops of the mountains were covered with snow.
                  
  (d) He has a chain of gold.

  THE CLAUSE:
  Definition :--
 * A group of words which forms part of a sentence, and contains a Subject and a predicate, is called a Clause.

  In the following sentences,the group of words in colour are Clauses:-

  (a) We cannot play while it is raining.
                             
  (b) I think that  you have made a mistake.
               
  (c) People  who pay their debts are trusted.

  KINDS OF SENTENCES :--
 
  1. Declarative Sentences
  2. Interrogative Sentences
  3. Imperative Sentences
  4. Exclamatory Sentences

  1. DECLARATIVE SENTENCES :--

 
      These  sentences make statements or assertions; as,

      * The moon shines in the sky.
     
      * The sun rises in the east.

    Note :--
  
      . A statement may be in the Affirmative or in the Negative; as,

      * Babita is a beautiful girl.
      * We should not tell a lie.

  2. INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES :--
 

      These sentences ask questions; as.

      * Where do you go ?
      * What is his name ?

  3. IMPERATIVE SENTENCES :-- 

      These sentences express commands, requests or entreaties; as,

      * Go in or you'll catch cold.    [suggestion]          

      * Please give me a glass of water.  [request]

 4. EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES :--   

      These sentences express strong feelings; as,

      * What a beautiful girl !
      * Hurrah ! We won the match.
